Six Avondale High School art students earned a first place/Gold Key in this year’s Southeastern Michigan Scholastic Art Awards. Their work will continue on to New York City for the National Competition in late March.

Rachel Tran, a senior from Rochester Hills, won a Best of Show awards for her art portfolio. She was one of seven portfolio winners from among 300 submissions. She also won a Silver Key (second place) for drawing, three third-place certificates for drawing and one for digital art.

The remaining Avondale Gold Key winners are:

Jack O’Neil, a senior from Troy, for his photography portfolio;

Andrew Lopes, a sophomore from Troy, who won two gold key awards, one each in drawing and painting. He also won a special $500 scholarship to participate in the Oakland University Art Intensive for summer 2012;

Jarrell Fields, a senior from Auburn Hills, for painting;

Halle Little, a senior from Auburn Hills, for ceramics/glass; and

Sandra Zhovner, a senior from Auburn Hills, for drawing. She also received two third-place certificates for drawing.

The award winners are all students of art teacher Leigh Wright. “These students are all wonderful examples of the vibrant art community at Avondale,” Wright said. “Their talent continues to stand out among high school art students.”

All of the entries will be on display at The College for Creative Studies in Detroit February 12 to March 2.

Dating back to 1923, the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards are an important opportunity for students to be recognized for their creative talents. Teens in grades 7 through 12 can apply in 30 categories of art and writing for the chance to earn scholarships and have their works exhibited or published. Past winners include Andy Warhol, Sylvia Plath, Truman Capote, Richard Avedon, Robert Redford and Joyce Carol Oates.

Avondale to dedicate renamed Field House

Avondale School District will host a dedication ceremony for the newly named Chuck Nurek Field House on Thursday, March 1. The event is open to the public; alumni and former athletes are encouraged to attend.

Nurek served as the Athletic Director at Avondale High School from 1978 to 1999.  Last November, the board of education voted to name the field house after him based on his outstanding service and dedication to Avondale.

“This will be a big day in Avondale’s history and we want current and former Avondale community members to celebrate with us,” said Avondale Superintendent George Heitsch. “Chuck Nurek’s contributions to Avondale go far beyond athletics; his legacy is one of leadership and character.”

The naming ceremony will take place at approximately 6:30 p.m., immediately following the Avondale boys’ junior varsity basketball game, which begins at 5 p.m., and prior to the boys’ varsity basketball game, which begins at 7 p.m.  The ceremony will run for approximately 30 minutes, with a reception in the media center immediately following.
