Perspective and Pepperoni

Last Wednesday was trick-or-treat night in Rochester and I hope everyone had as much fun as we did! My husband and I invited a few friends over for pizza and fun before we took our kids out to beg for candy. We know how fun our neighborhood is and we wanted our friends to be able to have a fun experience with their kids like we’ve had in the past. We always get so many trick-or-treaters and I enjoy seeing all the children’s costumes and families out together. It was no surprise that when I … [Read more...]

Dear Crabby, What Do I Do About Scary Decorations?

Dear Crabby, I really do not like all of the scary decorations that people put out for Halloween these days. My kids are young, and some of these decorations scare them and give them nightmares!  Why is it that people have no issue with putting scary props out on their yard, but if you dare to put a Nativity Scene in your yard, you face criminal charges? Sincerely, Common Sense Mom Dear Common Sense Mom, You certainly make a good point about these different holiday traditions and … [Read more...]

The Positive Side of Halloween

Ayrton trick-or-treating in downtown Rochester last year.

I absolutely love fall. It is my favorite time of year partly because it is so beautiful here in Rochester, but also because I enjoy eating all the fall goodies, like pumpkin bread and apples. We’ve already been to Yates’ Cider Mill several times! I love watching the trees change color and collecting leaves with my son, Ayrton. His birthday is just before Halloween and we have so much fun celebrating that day with him. I also know that with fall comes the beginning of the holiday season, … [Read more...]

Don’t Get Mad, Get Silly!

By Meghan Zeile These days, life spins out of control for me. With a 3-year-old son, baby #2 on the way, a bathroom/laundry room remodel, and a husband working overtime, I rarely get to sit and take a breath. I am on a schedule, getting from here to there on time and with everything clean and organized and accomplished. Or so I’d like to think. I can no longer suck down the amount of caffeine necessary to take on the world due to baby #2, thus leaving me exhausted and ready for a nap when … [Read more...]

Pirates and Ghosts of the Caribbean

Captain Blackbeard

The Spooky Bahamas Pirates used Fort Fincastle in Nassau and claims of torture haunt the entire site. Legendary pirate, Captain Blackbeard, is said to have used it as a torture chamber. The small chamber at the fort is extremely eerie and most folks can only stay in there a few seconds. “Sometimes when you walk in there, you are overcome with a feeling that you just want to turn around, and walk right back out” one visitor to the site said. Captain Blackbeard’s ghost is said to haunt … [Read more...]

Is Halloween Still Safe These Days?

Dear Crabby, My kids really want to go trick or treating this year, but I am very concerned.  The decorations and things that people put out these days are bad enough, and then with all the news of danger out there, I am not sure I should let them go.  What do you think? Sincerely, Concerned Mom Dear Concerned Mom, The world certainly has changed in the last thirty years or so, hasn't it?  When I was a young family man with young children and lots of energy, I had no problem … [Read more...]
