Travel Trends, Tips, and Lists for 2013

Where to Go in 2013

A couple of weeks ago I suggested a few ideas for Rochester Media readers to help plan your vacation time this year. January is the month when many travel experts give you their take on trends and tips. They also love to put out lists. So, I have compiled a collection of advice to add to your vacation planning for 2013.

Bad News

Peter Greenberg, author and travel news expert, has explained that airfares will rise 8 to 12 percent this year due to airline mergers and less competition. Airlines fees are going up too, as much as 60 percent from just last year. Also, foreign travelers coming to America have a reduced entry visa wait time, allowing more to travel sooner. While that may be good for the economy to have money being spent here in the States, it means higher hotel rates. Peter’s advice is to book a hotel now if you know the dates because rates are going up.

Good Tips

An early entrepreneur with travel websites was Johnny Jet. John’s website continues to be used as a major portal for all things travel and provides non-stop reporting from the road. Johnny Jet offers this advice when a flight is delayed or cancelled: “If your flight is canceled then get in line as soon as possible and also get on the phone and call the airline directly. Usually the airline representative at the call center can rebook you on a flight faster than the line moves to speak to customer service or the gate agent.”

Log your airline’s phone number into your cell phone. For a complete list, visit one of Johnny Jets informational sites called Airline Numbers.
