100 Women Who Care of Greater Rochester Reaches $250,000 Donated to Local Charities

100 Women Who Care of Greater Rochester Reaches $250,000 Donated to Local Charities Through its Unique Philanthropic Model

The goal is simple, gather 100 women together to donate $100 each to a local charity in one night. Founded in 2013, 100 Women Who Care of Greater Rochester has now turned into 255 committed members, donating $100 four times a year to a nonprofit chosen by the group.

On November 9, the group met for its 14th time since its inception. After hearing from three submitted charities, New Day Foundation for Families was chosen to receive $25,500 from 100 Women Who Care’s current membership. This donation marks an incredible $250,000 donated to Rochester area nonprofits in just three years.

Rochester Hills residents Michael Spehn and Gina Kell Spehn founded New Day Foundation for Families in memory of their late spouses whose legacies of family, faith, and generosity are the driving force behind their passion to serve the cancer community.

Offering support, financial assistance and counseling to families affected by a cancer diagnosis, New Day Foundation for Families is committed to having a positive impact on treatment outcomes and survivorship by reducing the catastrophic effects of financial toxicity caused by a cancer diagnosis. They accomplish their mission by offering financial assistance and emotional support programs to cancer patients and their families.

“We are thrilled to be chosen to receive this donation,” said Gina Kell Sphen, executive director and co-founder of New Day Foundation. “Just as this group takes pride in its no frills approach to direct giving, New Day also works to deliver immediate help to families facing cancer.  From help with the mortgage during cancer treatment to counseling services and more, we personally meet with each family to bring hope in the form they need most.”

100 Women Who Care of Greater Rochester is a unique and exciting brand of philanthropy that seeks to support local charities with very direct and basic needs. The group takes pride in its no-frills approach to direct giving.  At each meeting the 100 Women Who Care commit one hour of time to listen to three charity “pitches.” After a quick vote, each woman there agrees to the majority-rules philosophy, and write a $100 check directly to the winning charity.

“It is absolutely incredible to witness 255 women coming together from all walks of life to make a difference in our community.  We’ve been able to donate a quarter of a million dollars to local charities, that is such a huge impact. But, there are so many additional benefits that have resulted from this amazing group, said Amy Whipple, 100 Women Who Care-Greater Rochester co-founder.

“Non-profits are getting a platform to tell like-minded women about their work, winning non-profits are gaining press/media exposure which is resulting in more support, women are discovering a new passion about the causes and  volunteering at the non-profits we have connected with over the past three years … the list goes on and on.  Our model of philanthropy is so beautifully powerful, efficient and simple … I’m so proud of these women and their generous hearts!”

100 Women Who Care-Greater Rochester has also taken its giving model to other communities to assist them in launching their own groups. To date, the following groups have been formed:

·       100 Women Who Care – Grosse Pointe
