Local Author Book Sale at Sterlingfest

Annual Book Sale Grows To New Heights

The Sterling Heights Public Library’s signature book sale and signing is returning for its fourth year. On Saturday, July 28, over fifty talented Michigan authors and six local and national writers groups will take part in the library’s Local Author Book Sale. The sale is a prominent feature of the City of Sterling Heights’ annual festival, Sterlingfest.

“This is our biggest sale yet,” said Jason Groth, the library’s Public Relations and Programs Coordinator. “With so many authors this year, everyone can walk away with great read. We’ll have children’s books, adult books, fiction, and non-fiction with just about every genre represented. It’s quite the variety,” adds Groth.

The Local Author Book Sale will take place at the Richard Notte City Center on Saturday, July 28, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The authors will occupy tables along the covered walkway between the library and police department.

Most of the authors will be on site throughout the entire event, but some of the writing groups will rotate in their members at different times. “The Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) is one of the national writing groups we’ve invited,” said Groth. “They’ll be bringing many top-notch authors, including Kelly DiPucchio, the New York Times bestselling author of Grace for President and The Sandwich Swap.” DiPucchio will be at the SCBWI’s table from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Rochester Writers, one of the local authors’ groups represented, will be bringing a handful of authors, including award-winning R.L. Herron, Joan Dee Wilson, Devon Drake, Nora Cook Smith, and Gem Cano. “Southeast Michigan is home to many wonderful writers,” said Michael Dwyer, Founder of Rochester Writers, “We appreciate the opportunity to showcase authors in conjunction with Sterlingfest.”

The library’s own writing group, the Creative Writers Workshop, has been working closely with the library to ensure the event’s success. “The Local Author Book Sale is a fantastic opportunity for local authors to bring their creativity to the community,” said Terry Hojnacki, the group’s facilitator, “What better place than a library to bring writers and readers together.”

Other groups at the event include Detroit Working Writers, Great Lakes Association of Horror Writers, and Romance Authors.

  1. Are there other local libraries that do the same? It would be great to stimulate sales for our Local Authors @ Rochester Library.

    • Many libraries host authors to some degree, others do something similar to this event. The Rochester Hills library does not host an event like this … you should suggest it to them.
