Meals on Wheels 5k Run/Walk Goes Virtual

The annual 5k Run/Walk for Meals on Wheels – hosted by the Older Persons’ Commission (OPC) – will take place as a virtual event this year. Community members and OPC supporters of all ages and abilities can participate in this 5k at any time and any place during the month of June. Whether participants walk or jog the 5K (3.1 miles) all at once, over several days, or over the course of the entire month, all are welcome to participate and help raise awareness and critical funds for this essential service.

5k Run/Walk for Meals on Wheels Goes Virtual

This longstanding community event is a traditional fan favorite, and participants appreciate its support of OPC’s Meals on Wheels program. The OPC program provides daily hot meals to homebound seniors in Rochester, Rochester Hills, Oakland Township as well as Auburn Hills, Brandon Township, Independence Township, Lake Orion, Oxford, Addison Township. Every $5 donated makes it possible to deliver a meal to a senior in need. Last year alone, OPC provided over 121,000 meals.

“Meals on Wheels is for seniors that are not able to shop or prepare their own meals, so without this program many of the seniors would be prematurely placed in assisted living or nursing homes,” said OPC Executive Director Renee Cortright. “The volunteers who deliver the meals provide a daily wellness check and are a bright spot in the senior’s day.”

Registration is open for this year’s run/walk, and the registration form can be downloaded. The entry fee is $25, and all those who sign up by June 1 will receive an event t-shirt. For more information, contact Colleen Burtka at cburtka@opcseniorcenter.org or 248-659-1034.
