Rep. Elissa Slotkin Welcomes Constituents to Official Opening of Rochester Hills District Office

Nearly 200 people attended the official opening of U.S. Rep. Elissa Slotkin’s (MI-08) district office yesterday in Rochester Hills. This is the second office Slotkin has opened in the 8th district to directly serve constituents from across its three counties. The district headquarters office in Lansing opened in January.

“Welcome to our office in Rochester Hills,” Slotkin said at the event’s opening. “You all should feel free to come by anytime, to call it home, I want it to be accessible and open.”

Slotkin introduced each member of her district staff, and explained what her Congressional office could do to serve residents. She encouraged veterans or seniors having trouble accessing benefits through the VA or Social Security, as well as those who may need help with immigration or visa issues, to visit her office and speak with members of her staff who can help resolve those issues.

“If there are community events that you think we should be attending or know about, we have county representatives who are in the district representing me – they should be your eyes and ears, your representatives to make sure I know exactly what is going on in the community,” Slotkin said of her field representatives, who serve as direct liaisons with each of the 8th district’s three counties.

Tina Barton, Rochester Hills City Clerk introduced Slotkin at the event.

“I want to congratulate her for being on the House Armed Services Committee,” Barton said. “But also, as a municipal clerk, I want to say how important it is to me that she is on the Homeland Security Committee and specifically has really given attention to the fact that we want to keep our elections secure and keep foreign interference out of our elections.” Slotkin has championed a bill to make it illegal for foreign entities to purchase ads, particularly on social media, in order to influence U.S. elections.

Slotkin reiterated her pledge to work to represent every resident of the 8th district – regardless of party or whether or not they voted for her: “There are people here I’ve never met who just came by, there are people who have come up to me and said, ‘I didn’t vote for you but I’m willing to give you a chance.’ And let me say very, very clearly that it does not matter if you voted for me, it does not matter if you’re a Democrat or Republican or Independent or anything in between, my job is to represent you, to listen to you, and to do everything I can to improve your lives. That is my job and I take that extremely seriously.

“Places like Michigan, where we have neighbors and family members with different political views – we are a rarer and rarer thing across the country,” she added. “People are separating out into political groups in a way that I think is unhealthy and antithetical to what our Founding Fathers wanted for us, which was to be a country where we could all provide our ideas and our ingenuity and our excitement and our hope and provide that to move us forward, instead of separating out into different Americas. So Michigan has a very specific role to play in reminding people what this country is about and how we’re going to act.”

U.S. Rep. Elissa Slotkin’s new office is located at 445 S. Livernois, Suite 316, Rochester Hills, MI.
