Seeking Volunteers to Serve at the Library

The Marines are always looking for a few good men and women. We can’t spell “Success” without U. Be all you can be.

Those recruiting slogans might as well serve as the clarion call for the Friends Library Store at the Rochester Hills Public Library. The store is seeking volunteers to keep things humming at the facility located on the Library’s first floor at 500 Olde Towne Road in downtown Rochester.

Volunteers are “100 percent important because the store is totally run by volunteers,” said store manager Darlene Tomczyk. “Without them there are days the store has to close.”

To fully staff the store—three persons per shift, 16 shifts a week—requires 48 workers. Right now there are only 40 regulars. The schedules are flexible, which makes it convenient for folks who are looking to stay busy or just help one of the area’s institutional gems without a major time commitment.

What are other advantages? “Meeting and making friends and being out in the public, socialization, raising money for the library and they get a discount for store goods,” Tomczyk said. Retail experience is, of course, helpful but the Friends also train anyone willing to help.

The Friends Membership Application form, is available online, at www.rhpl.org. Click on the “Jobs and Volunteering” link at the bottom of the page and follow the instructions. Applications are also available in the store and at the Library info desk when the store isn’t open. Or applicants can call the Friends Membership line, 248-650-7160, and leave a message.

The store hours are:

Monday 10:00 a.m.-8:00 p.m.

Tuesday 10:00 a.m. -6:00 p.m.

Wednesday-Saturday 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.

Sunday 1:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m. (from September through June)

  1. I’m a store volunteer; have been since 2002. It’s fun. I’ve met and made some good friends while feeling like I’ve helped out the library. I highly recommend it.
