Judge Warren Commentary: Being Present in a Modern World

Our life as modern Americans is full of distractions. When a single computer exponentially more powerful than the all the devices used to land a man on the moon fits in your pocket, with access to nearly all the information (good, bad, and neutral) mankind currently has available within a few taps, is it any wonder that we can become entertained in a mind-numbing fashion? I need not list the litany of social media, TV programs, movies, sports, video games, shopping, and other myriads that can … [Read more...]

Judge Michael Warren Looks Past the Empty Gestures of Independence Day

As we approach Independence Day, the toxic cultural and political environment in which we live continues to unravel slowly our once shared belief in the American Dream. Hon. Michael Warren Many people this July Fourth will undoubtedly go through the empty gestures of fireworks, barbecues, and family gatherings. Hardly any will reflect on the magnificent Declaration of Independence and how, despite its many flaws, it is a shining, monumental change for all of mankind. Let’s look at four … [Read more...]

Judge Warren Commentary: Gratitude to all Election Candidates

I lost my first two elections. First, I lost (ironically) to my now friend and tremendous Patriot Week supporter United States Senator Gary Peters. Second, I lost (also ironically) to other now friends in a bid to keep my seat on the State Board of Education. After I was appointed to my current position on the Oakland County Circuit Court, I was (unexpectedly) unopposed to retain my seat and then was re-elected drawing no opposition. In 2012, I successfully fought back a robust challenge to keep … [Read more...]

Judge Warren Patriot Week Commentary

Hon. Michael Warren Over a decade ago, my then 10-year-old daughter Leah pounded on a table and demanded a new celebration for America - and Patriot Week was born. She did so because the traditional civic calendar had been hallowed out by empty excuses for three-day weekends, barbecues, and appliance sales. The idea was to renew the spirit of America. Little did we predict that in 2020 the nation would need Patriot Week for another reason - to heal the spirit of America. The toxic … [Read more...]

Skip the Sales and Pancakes this Memorial Day and Honor the Sacred Dead Instead

Commentary on Memorial Day, by Judge Michael Warren I love pancakes, especially at the International House of Pancakes. However, when I sat down recently at my friendly neighborhood IHOP, I was barraged at the table with the message that I should "celebrate Memorial Day" by buying red, white and blue pancakes. My stomach ached instead of hungered. We should honor Memorial Day, not cheapen it with pretty pancakes. Of course, IHOP is hardly an outlier. Look around, the crass … [Read more...]

Down with President’s Day-Up with Washington’s Birthday & Patriot Week

Commentary by Judge Michael Warren We recently went through the buffoonery of celebrating Presidents’ Day through grand sales at retail outlets and a delay in the post. Meanwhile, Washington’s Birthday went by without a whisper. Why exactly the culture has decided that we should celebrate every single President - including the luminaries of Chester Arthur and Franklin Pierce - with deep discounts on appliances is beyond me. Like so many of our other civic holidays, Presidents’ Day is mostly … [Read more...]
